It is All within You

The Art of Aromatherapy

By Martien Bakens

In the art of Aromatherapy, there are a couple of misnomers; to begin with the biggest one the name 'Aromatherapy'. It is good to know that the therapeutic effects of essential oils (that also smell nice) greatly exceed the sense of smell.

It can be said that the sense of smell is our fastest of the senses and holds the greatest connection to our emotions. Once whiffed, an aroma goes right to the limbic brain, and translates into an emotional response. This can explain why there are times we do not like a smell, or even a person. This may be related, for we smell one another long before we see one another.

When we do not like something, there is always a remembrance in our brain that connects us to a previous time when we experienced that smell that was unpleasant. The wonder of the oils is that it can bring about a catharsis or healing in that area by simply being with it, staying with the smell for an elongated period in time. Now when you do not like the smell to begin with and it is hard to be with it, you simply dilute the essential oil more.

At any rate, as with most things, the best way oils can be best used is in minute doses, as our body works with those low dosages, for instance, hormonal information is given in very minute amounts. Too much does not do the trick.

I started to say though that smell is not the only thing, and by far it isn't. These wonderful essential oils and great gifts of the Earth Mother have many uses, and the use of a diffuser is only one of them. The therapeutic effects by far out-weight the nice smells.

From bruises to old scar tissue, we can work with the oils in many ways. Let's look at old scar tissue. Treating old scar tissue with a singular oil such as Geranium will show that this oil can soften old scar tissue and restore a smoothness and flexibility to the skin around that area. You massage the Geranium oil in using a very small quantity, meaning only a couple of drops, into the skin on and around the scar tissue. Geranium is one of the oils that can be used undiluted. Together with Lavender and Rose, it is one of the only oils that can be used that way. Other oils, like Oregano, can burn on the skin.

We have seen scars heal that have been with people for over forty years and become smooth. Geranium helps the signal or electrical current to by-pass the blockage that was created by, whatever intrusion that mechanically or emotionally disrupted the regular flow in the first place.

In general, you can get a good essential oil from a health store but beware of the super stores that sell Rose oil for a couple of bucks, you do not have a deal there. Most likely these oils are the synthetic brothers of their wonderful natural healers. Synthetic oils, and even oils that are called natural, are not always 100% pure essential oils. For example, we know petroleum is a "natural oil", and many products are made from it but we do not want that on, or near our skin. Read the label carefully, as fragranced oils are not an essential oil.

More on the joyous effects of oils. Once you have started using good quality oils you will be hooked to the good stuff, because it enhances our vibrational level so fast that you will not choose the 'alternative' any more. Mother nature has a way to restore well-being and strength to us and making it pleasurable too.

I know often times when we cleanse the body, we will get sicker than we have ever felt because the toxins are finally being drawn out from deep within. When you reach this level of work with essential oils, you are already aware of this potential and have the strength to go through those days.

The use of a well trained, aroma therapist may be helpful when making your choice of oil for treatment. Choose an oil format that you feel best suits you. What do I mean here? If you like baths, you can have a nice bath-blend created for you, or even a wonderful shampoo. When you like to pamper yourself use a lotion, or a perfume-oil may be your choice. Most often people will use the aroma-diffuser to dispense oils into the room. Here you may want to go with perhaps the candle diffuser. Watch that the distance from the candle to the oil holder is far enough away as you do not want to burn the oil. Burning the oil can create other chemical components, easy does it here too. There are nice electric diffusers that can nicely handle pretty large rooms and can be safer for use in an office. Remember to consider all those who will be using the room.

One oil that I do wish to rave about a little is Rosemary. This wonderful herb grown in the Mediterranean and known as a seasoning for Italian dishes has an oil that invigorates, strengthens the self, so that no one will energetically intrude into your space. Now we all know about that personal space thing. This for instance, is specifically helpful for teachers as it will keep you in your own energy field, and keep you clear of any energetic intrusion. It gives you a safe space, to do whatever you need to do, or experience from a place of self-awareness. Only smelling this oil will do the trick, so having it on a chain in a pendant that slowly disperses the 'message from a bottle' can be all it takes. Have fun with some nice oils.
